    Speakers and Topics

    Professor Brett Mitchell – The burden of CAUTI
    Professor Brett Mitchell is an internationally renowned expert and researcher in the field of infection prevention and control. He is a Professor of Nursing at the University of Newcastle, Editor-in-Chief of Infection, Disease in Health, and is a Fellow of the Australian College of Nursing and the Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control. Professor Mitchell is a member of the National COVID-19 Evidence Taskforce Leadership Group and was the Chair of the recent NHMRC committee responsible for the development of the Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare. He has over 150 peer reviewed publications and conference presentations, and has worked in a variety of nursing positions in Australia and abroad. His research interests in the area of infection control include environmental cleaning, pneumonia, surveillance and urinary tract infections.

    Dr Ashani Couchman – Clinical management of complicated CAUTI’s

    Dr Ashani Couchman is a Urological Surgeon who sub-specialises in transitional (adolescent) urology, and neuro-urology. Consulting in both public and private, The Royal Adelaide Hospital, Continence Matters, The International Spine Center and is a visiting specialist at the Womans and Childrens Hospital. As the elected chair of the Childrens and Young Persons committee of the International Continence Society, the President Of the Continence Foundation of Australia SA branch and the chair of the Younger Fellows Committee in South Australia for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Dr Couchman advocates for patients and colleagues both in Australia and internationally.

    Alyson Sweeney – CAUTI and long-term catheter use in the home setting

    Alyson Sweeney is a Continence Nurse Specialist in community care, and is a clinical team leader with the Tasmanian Health Service in Southern Tasmania. Alyson has an enduring interest in understanding and improving the care and well-being of people who live with a long-term suprapubic catheter (SPC) at home. Alyson has worked with and conducted research on this population over many years. This work includes a masters degree that explored what it is like to live with a SPC. Other works include SPC change methods; a crossover comparison cohort trial. Presently Alyson has completed a doctoral thesis that has led to the development of a best practice guide for the care of people who live at home with a long-term SPC.

    Karina So – Managing the complex patient with a long term urinary catheter, a case study

    Karina So is a Urology Nurse Practitioner in private practice and a Clinical Lecturer of Concord Medical School, University of Sydney NSW. She has extensive clinical experience in management of adults with acute, chronic and complex urological cancer and non-cancer related problems. Over the last 31 years, Karina has held multiple leadership positions in professional groups and government-sponsored expert panels. She developed local and district clinical practice guidelines and on-line point-of-care resources. Recently she contributed to the Health Pathway project by Sydney Local Health District on urinary catheterisation.
