Rebound in antimicrobial use reported

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care has released  new technical report ahead of the AURA 2023 release on 16 November.

The report, Analysis of 2015-2022 PBS and RPBS antimicrobial dispensing data, reveals an increase in antimicrobials supplied under the PBS and RPBS last year.

Antimicrobial use increased by nearly 10% from 2021 to 2022 following the dramatic decline of over 25% in the two years prior (2019-2021).

Despite the increase, antimicrobial use remains well below pre-pandemic levels and the Commission sees this as providing an opportunity to sustain improvements in appropriate antimicrobial prescribing.
