You don’t often get email from 00000079a27fd98b-dmarc-request@aicalist.org.au. Learn why this is important

    Hi all,

Good day. We recently did our renovations in CSSD and Endoscopy Reprocessing Area with Sustainability in mind.

    1. Our equipment interface will save tons of paper documents.
    2. Our social responsibility (CSSD) of taking over the reprocessing of Endoscopes from our nursing and clinical team so they can focus on patient care.

The pandemic exposed the extent of our reliance on non-biodegradable items in patient care. This prompts all areas of patient care to play their part and contribute.

Specific to CSSD, I am keen on contributing to waste reduction further. I am into research on reducing CSSD reliance on polypropylene used as a sterile barrier system on critical medical devices. A minor item that forms part of the whole issue can hopefully contribute to reducing waste in CSSD.

There is a lot at stake, and we must be united as a first-world nation. No doubt, IC plays a big part in this.

I have come across a site:

    Hi all,

Stan is a local senior surgeon leading the charge with reducing waste in surgery etc.
He keeps on getting told that things are the way they are because of infection control considerations
I dont think that is true!
However, it really is important for IPC as a profession to promote more sustainable approaches with less waste etc.
I invite you to share your local initiatives so that we can learn more together about better ways!
Clearly decisions made on a cost reduction basis need to factor in the waste and resources issues.

    Best wishes
    John

Subject: infection control issues in and around operating theatres

    Hi John

Just to expand on our corridor conversation the other day:

There seem to be a number of procurement decisions that have been made in the past, and some nursing policies and procedures, that may not be based on good scientific evidence. Much of these decisions and policies pertain to infection control issues.

    Examples:

    1. the wholesale move to single-use disposable gowns and surgical drapes
    2. the ubiquity of single-use disposable surgical plastic equipment
    3. the policy about the need to use a separate bottle of surgical antiseptic prep solution for each patient

As we now have an obligation to progress NSW public hospital healthcare to net carbon zero by 2040, it is time to analyse these and other practices in and around operating theatres to identify those that are not based on evidence and carry adverse environmental impact (high carbon footprint of supply chain, non-biodegradable waste, etc.) and high cost to the health system.

To this end, I am seeking your support and that of your colleagues, in sifting through the evidence base and in promoting environmentally sustainable practices and procurement.

Josh and Sarah have already leant their support to our campaign to address the inappropriate use of non-sterile gloves in the hospital, particularly starting with operating theatres.

Many thanks, and I look forward to discussing this further with you.

    Hi Roslyn

One of the best resources I have seen is the Scrubbing, Gowning & Glowing DVD from ACORN. You would need to purchase this, but it is a great resource, in my opinion.

    Good afternoon everyone,

Many dentists perform implant and other surgical procedures and I am after some resources regarding surgical hand wash technique.

In particular, the 4% chlorhexidine surgical handwash where the manufacturer recommends a 30 second scrub followed by a 2 minute scrub.

Are there any videos or posters available that I could use?

    Many thanks,
