Hello
I was just wondering if you can help me with some information regarding Prion Tissue and reprocessing of surgical instruments. Are there any recommendations that have been put forward to increase the sterilisation cycle on steam sterilisers for tonsil trays, if so what is the recommended time and benefits.
Thanks

Hi Fiona
Please refer to the 2013 CJD infection control guidelines available on the
link belowhttp://www.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/content/icg-guidelines
-index.htmGThere are no recommendations specific to management of tonsil trays as these
tissues are deemed low infectivity. In the United Kingdom there was an issue identified with tonsil trays
related to variant CJD being present in lymphoid tissue which caused a
flurry of recommendations, too numerous to relate here – however this is
not applicable to the Australian context.I hope this helps.
