Hi Helen,

According to ACORN 2018 Standards for Infection Prevention, the Appendices to this Standard outline management of patients on Transmission-based Precautions in the Perioperative environment.

The ACORN Standards specify that for Standard, Airborne and Droplet Precautions, cleaning using neutral detergent as per the usual between patients / daily cleaning schedule of cleaning horizontal surfaces, trolleys and equipment and mopping of floors is sufficient, although does refer to or a health service organisation approved product for airborne and droplet precautions.

For contact precautions the ACORN Standard does make reference to using triple cleaning for C. difficile, Norovirus, Rotaviruses, ESBL, MRGN, VISA, MBL and gastroenteritis and the need for a contact precautions cleaning is required in other cases such as uncontained bowel or urinary contamination in VRE cases but where none of this contamination has occurred then standard end of case cleaning applies [i.e. cleaning with neutral detergent or an HSO approved product].

However, there is also a mention of using dedicated cleaning equipment and sodium hypochlorite in the contact precautions section.

Referencing the current NHMRC Guidelines, cleaning followed by disinfection using a 2 step clean or 2 in 1 product is recommended [2010:93] for cleaning when patients have required Transmission-based Precautions during their admission and this is what is in my policy for Day Surgery settings.

I hope that helps?
Kind Regards

Morning Brain trust,

I was looking for some advice in regards to infection control in theater.
I was wondering in anyone can tell me how they clean the operating theater after MRSA, VRE, ESBL.
Recently a staff member said that we are over doing the cleaning in regards to what I do and we only need to use soap and water.
I give them 2 options of how to clean with the products, which I cant mention on here I believe.

I was just wondering what is a good cleaning regime for all the codes?

Any information would be helpful,
Kind regards
Helen
