AS/NZS4187 does not dictate the types of containment systems [trays] that you use for your RMDs.
Plastic trays have been in wide spread use for decades in Australia, however as those of us working in reprocessing know, the solid sides of the trays and the thickness of the squares in the bottom of the trays can easily impede cleaning effectiveness.
Similarly, the plastic trays are not ideal for ensuring that the load in a washer-disinfector is easily dried and we can experience problems with wet loads in the steriliser for the same reasons.
In short, using metal mesh trays for your RMDs is considered best practice and I would encourage you to work towards eliminating the plastic trays over time and as budget allows.

We use plastic perforated trays for instrument (RMD) reprocessing. Does this comply with AS/NZS 4187 standard? The AS/NZS 4187 standard is vague. We have been recommended to replace all plastic perforated trays with open wire mesh tray. This will be a very expensive option for us.
We have validated the plastic perforated trays in ultrasonic, washer disinfectors and sterilisers during the performance qualification also each year during re- performance qualification.
