Hi Jane,
We looked into this and like you found little in the literature – however we decided pragmatically that staff are wearing hats as they are over and around the surgical field and as the pts are immobile the risks were negligible

Is anyone aware of specific guidance/evidence on what patients should wear when they enter theatre for a procedure? Most will wear a gown and probably non-slip socks but a Q has arisen re: use of theatre hats. There’s variation even within our hospital network and there seems limited literature on this issue. My sense is that shedding from hair could be significant and that’s why we insist on staff wearing hats, but patients being so immobile during procedures would present a much lower risk (apart from if having head and neck surgery!) Any thoughts would be welcome! Thanks
