WHO holds IHR Joint External Evaluation briefing

The World Health Organisation (WHO) held an IHR Joint External Evaluation (JEE) briefing on 5 August 2024. 

The briefing covered how Joint External Evaluation contributes to National health securities capacity, and how the JEE process works. It explained the role of JEE in assessing countries’ core public health capacities in implementing the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005). 

IHR 2005 is ‘a legally-binding instrument agreed upon by 196 states parties to prevent, protect against, control and provide a public health response to the international spread of disease in ways that are commensurate with and restricted to public health risks, and which avoid unnecessary interference with international traffic and trade.’ 

The purpose of JEE is to: 

  • Identify the most urgent needs for health security 
  • Prioritise opportunities for enhanced preparation and response 
  • Promote more inclusive partnerships and transparency 
  • Support fund mobilisation
