    Purpose of the Role

    The purpose of this role is to provide clinical expertise and consultancy
    through advanced clinical leadership relevant to the speciality of Infection
    Prevention and Management. The Clinical Nurse Consultant provides direct and
    indirect care as required and works in collaboration with the Nurse Unit
    Manager, Nurse Educator and wider QEII Jubilee health care team, supporting
    the clinical unit in provision of safe quality healthcare through exemplary
    clinical nursing standards of practice for the specialty of Infection
    Prevention and Management.

    The framework for delivery of services is underpinned by the Implementation
    Standards, Policies, Guidelines and Protocols. These Standards are informed
    by the National patient safety standards – Standard 3 – Preventing and
    Controlling Healthcare Associated Infections.

    The Infection Prevention and Management Unit is located within the Division
    of Medicine and is responsible for the implementation and management of the
    QEII Jubilee Hospital Infection Management Program. The Unit provides high
    level advice to health care providers, patients, the general public, and
    other stakeholders on issues related to infection prevention and management.
    A core component of the Infection Management Program is the development and
    implementation of strategies to prevent or minimise health care associated
    infections including multi-drug resistant organisms (e.g. Methicillin
    resistant Staphylococcus aureus [MRSA]), occupational exposures to blood and
    body fluids (e.g. needle stick injuries), surgical site infections and blood
    stream infections.

    The QEII Hospital Infection Management Team consists of 1 FTE Clinical Nurse
    Consultant, 1.53 FTE Clinical Nurses and 2 part time Infectious Diseases
    Physician (ID clinic once a week and ID patient rounds three a week), 1
    Infectious Diseases Registrar and 1 Anti-microbial stewardship Pharmacist.
    The unit comprises a close-knit team working across all areas of the
    facility, and across the interdisciplinary teams.
