Hi All,
We are currently reviewing our management of patients with respiratory illness across our facility. Part of this review involves the management of patients who require non-invasive ventilation. We are seeing a marked increase in the number of patients requiring this therapy which has led to purchasing more units to be able to meet the demand.
This increase in demand does see patients being placed in general medical wards while receiving this therapy.
The clinical areas are old buildings so we only have limited single rooms or six bed bays to accommodate patients.
There is often more than one medical ward that will have a patient receiving non-invasive ventilation at any given time.
We are looking at ways we can locate these patients in a designated multi bed bay to provide consistent competent care from both nursing and medical staff along with the better use of resources having these patients together. There are obvious infection control issues with this plan dependent on what disease process has led to the patient requiring this therapy. If we can reduce the multi bed bay from six beds to four we then have more than three metres spatial separation between each patient. There is a potential that there will be a mix of patients in this bay ie empty beds will be used for other general medical admissions.
Just would like any information from clinicians who may have encountered the same issue and how you have overcome the practicalities.
Also if anyone can identify any issues we need to consider, this would be very helpful.Regards
