Hi All.
I have just been asked the following question.
From an infection control point of view is there any preference in the use of Isopropyl Alcohol or Ethanol in the tinted products used for topical antisepsis?I am only aware of recommendations for alcoholic chlorhexidine and not a specific alcohol. Is anyone able to direct me further?
Kind regards,

Hi Fiona,
2 of the main producers of skin prep that we use in Aus combine their CHG
with IPA. Sorry, not permitted to name them. I did an experiment, and our
ethanol evaporates slightly faster than IPA on skin. Its not just the choice of alcohol and CHG, but also the friction (time
and method, no more circles) and drying time to allow air drying (whilst
trying to keep the surgeons hands away from the sponge to dry the skin
with it!).Happy to send you studies on that if you like. Hope that helped a bit!
Regards,
Helen Scott, CICP-P
