At a large DHB in NZ we have auditors for all confirmed or highly suspected COVID19 cases. We use an electronic tool to record the audit and the results get emailed to a list of people including IPC and nominated Exec members. This allows rapid escalation of any issues identified.

Happy to be emailed if anyone wants to find out any further information.

A really interesting pre-proof study was published through the APIC journal (AJIC) last month, looking at the value of having trained observers (called dofficers in this article) to monitor donning and doffing of PPE during an in-hospital COVID-19 outbreak. This is the first time I have seen a real-world study of this kind, and the results are interesting.

One of the great assets of this study is that they have included all of their training info, and audit tools. Very useful.

We have commenced the use of a buddy program here for donning and doffing with Droplet Precautions, so this is a welcome study that demonstrates this is an effective intervention in reducing errors. More work on whether these types of interventions are cost effective as well would be useful, though.

Are many facilities in Australia utilising some kind of trained observer role for PPE donning and doffing now? If you are, are you only doing this for care only of known or suspected COVID-19 patients, or have you extended this to include a wider clinical focus (eg all infections requiring Droplet or Airborne Precautions)?

Cheers
Michael
