Hi Everyone,

I believe there is a lot of confusion on “fogging’ or Bio-misting.

Many of the guidelines are generally for work health and safety as
unfortunately many operators have used inferior products or products that
were harmful when used in this way, especially in 2020/21.

Bio-misting has been used for many years in several settings including food
manufacturing and farming and have been found effective in other facilities.
The guidelines also state that if this method has been previously used, it
can be continued to be. This would cover facilities that have been properly
trained in the use of this method and do not need to change their protocols.

There are several products that can be safely used in these machines and are
effective against norovirus and other pathogens without containing bleach.

Bleach should never be used in this method. It can be harmful and damaging,
particularly to soft furnishings.

We have heard some harrowing stories of people mis-using products and
causing harm to themselves or surfaces.

Using correct products with proper training can be a very cost-effective
method to keep areas safe but again, I would stress that this would be only
as part of a comprehensive cleaning and disinfecting protocol and never as a
standalone solution.

I would also like to add that it is crucial to check on the instructions
that come with the product as, for instance, the product mentioned earlier
requires a room to be kept closed for 2 hours after application.

I would suspect that this would not be practical in most settings.

I hope this is information is helpful.

With Kind Regards

Hello,

It is called Fogging in Queensland.

We have followed up with several gastro outbreaks in childcare centres (CCC)
and residential aged care facilities (RACF). They often call Public health
to discuss the value of Fogging as it generally costs about $200 per Room.

Our advice is it works best when there is a known pathogen – if it is
Norovirus then the fogging must include bleach. When ask the fogging
companies – the answer is usually no?

We also advised that if Fogging is going to be used then all items must be
surfaced cleaned with detergent to remove any fomites. We recommend that
they clean all areas that are frequently touched including under tables,
chairs etc. Curtains and soft furnishings will need to be removed as they
become wet.

When we discuss this with the facilities they often think- whilst they are
putting in the effort to clean they might as well bleach and save some
money.

I am not sure of any peer review studies available on Fogging. I would like
to know if anyone has sighted any.

Cheers

Hi,

I would think that in the current climate with COVID, I would be hesitate to
use such a device. I have never heard of anything in Acute care or Aged care
being used.

ACIPCLIST@ACIPC.ORG.AU> On Behalf Of Jude Searles

Hi Folks

I have just been asked by one of our cleaners about the possibility of
getting a ‘bomb’ to clean our infectious rooms. What she described was
something akin to a flea bomb that you set off and then close the door. Does
anyone know if this is a thing and how much they cost?

Cheers
