IPC in endoscopy updated GENCA/GESA guidelines

The Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA), in collaboration with the Gastroenterological Nurses College of Australia (GENCA), have released updated guidelines for Infection Prevention and Control in Endoscopy.

Infection prevention and control remain central to safe endoscopic procedures, and Australia continues to lead in this area thanks to the work of GESA, GENCA, and collaborating organisations. Since the 2021 publication of Infection Prevention and Control in Endoscopy, the Infection Prevention and Control in Endoscopy (IPCE) Committee has tracked new scientific and commercial developments, and are dedicated to reducing or eliminating the risk of endoscopic transmission of infection.

This updated document has several key additions including expanded guidance on single-use endoscopes, a new reprocessing system, and an innovative drying and storage system now being adopted in practice. All recommendations align with the new Australian Standard AS 5369:2023, which replaces AS/NZS 4187:24 and AS/NZS 4815:2006.
