ACIPC’s Short Course in Infection Prevention and Control in Aged Care Settings is an online version of our popular face-to-face Aged Care workshops which has been delivered all over Australia in the last couple of years. This course is designed for individuals from a variety of roles/professions working in an Aged Care Setting. It is recommended that participants have a background in nursing. It comprises 6 modules, about 18-20 hours of learning, which consists of self-directed learning supported by online resources, video, structured reading, webinar content, moderated forum discussion, question and answer forum, and email. The course can be undertaken over a 6-8 week period and a certificate of completion to students who complete the course. There is no exam.

Aged care settings are an essential part of healthcare, and residents are at significant risk, highlighting the importance of this unique educational offering.

Course Aims

This course aims to prepare residential and community aged care setting clinical staff with the necessary information to design implement and evaluate high-quality infection prevention and control practices in an aged care setting.

Course Delivery

The course will be delivered over 6-8 weeks, and includes video presentations, directed readings, moderated online module-related discussion forum, question and answer forum, webinars and email. The course will give scope for a wide range of staff roles to gain knowledge and insight from the content. The course addresses adult learning principles.

Course Cost

$500 per student (including GST).

Learning Outcomes/Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the relevant National Guidelines pertaining to quality and safety in residential aged care setting
  • Initiate, plan, implement and evaluate broad functions relating to IPC in Aged Care Settings
  • Synthesise knowledge to identify and provide solutions to complex problems relating to infection risk in residents, visitors and staff
  • Understand the rationale for, and be able to defend the use of hand hygiene, standard and transmission-based precautions in the care setting
  • Be able to source, adapt and implement setting specific tools and strategies to aid understanding and compliance with evidence-based infection prevention and control practices, guidelines and policies, including a relevant antimicrobial stewardship program
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of audit and surveillance activities relevant to the setting
  • Be able to demonstrate how to identify, respond, manage and communicate during an outbreak of a transmissible infection in the setting, specifically appropriate wearing of PPE for all staff
  • Utilise an appropriate governance framework for the implementation, management, and communication of appropriate IPC policies standards, and procedures for Infection Prevention and Control in an aged care setting
