The new Australian Centre for Disease Control (CDC) commenced operation on 1 January 2026
While ACIPC recognises the importance of a national CDC, the exclusion of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) as a recognised specialty risks undermining public health and safety.
IPC expertise is essential to protect consumers and healthcare workers, improve quality and safety across care settings, and strengthen Australia’s preparedness for future infectious disease threats.
ACIPC strongly recommends the Australian CDC formally include IPC experts to ensure:
• expert IPC guidance during future pandemics
• standardised IPC protocols across healthcare and community settings
• effective prevention and control of emerging and future infectious diseases
• a robust national surveillance program for healthcare-associated infections (HAIs)
