Vaccination Program in aged care
Wednesday 19 August 2026, 2.00PM AEST
Speaker: Geraldine Freriks
Vaccination Program in aged care
This presentation explores the development and implementation of a comprehensive immunisation program within residential aged care, encompassing both residents and staff. The program is structured around two interconnected branches: resident immunisation and workforce immunisation, recognising that effective protection requires a whole-of-facility approach.
The session will outline the key components required to establish and sustain a structured immunisation program. These include:
- Promotion and education strategies to support informed participation
- Recommended vaccine types for residents and staff
- Consent processes and documentation requirements
- Vaccine sourcing and supply coordination
- Cold chain management and storage compliance
- Role delineation, including GP-led vaccination for residents and designated vaccination providers for staff
- Scheduling systems to ensure timely administration
- Accurate recording and reporting, including documentation in the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR)
- The presentation will also examine governance considerations, program coordination, and strategies to address common challenges such as incomplete immunisation histories, consent complexities, and fragmented documentation systems.
By implementing a structured and well-governed immunisation program, aged care services can reduce vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks, improve resident health outcomes, protect staff, and minimise hospital transfers.
