You are warmly invited to attend the upcoming Paediatric SIG meeting which will be held on Tuesday, 26 May at 2:00 PM AEST (NSW, TAS, VIC & ACT time). This meeting will be offered online via Zoom.
Topic: Evolution of Australia’s first permanent nurse-led comprehensive paediatric vascular access service and role in infection prevention and control
Event Description:
This session’s presenter is Catherine Baring (Miller), a Paediatric Vascular Access Nurse Consultant at South Australian Medical Imaging (SAMI), Women’s & Children’s Hospital (WCH) site, Adelaide. Catherine will present about how the Fast Advice and Access Service for Intravenous Routes with Imaging (FAAIRI) Service is improving care for children with peripheral and central vascular access devices. The presentation will highlight how evidence-informed implementation has contributed to the service’s evolution, attracted funding for education and nursing staff, led to improved policies and products, and grown relationships across both SAMI and WCH.
Catherine will discuss the tangible benefits of the FAAIRI Service. These include the elimination of hospital acquired Bloodstream infections for seven consecutive months, avoidance of intramuscular antibiotics during paediatric sepsis, and upskilling of over 70 nurses and 120 doctors in ultrasound guided peripheral intravenous cannula insertion. Education on ‘placing the right line the first time’ has doubled peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) insertions and has also led to a ‘Critical Line Policy’ ensuring that difficult to replace lines are not prematurely removed and are instead salvaged during infection or thrombus where safe to do so.
Following the presentation, there will be a discussion and open forum. We invite attendees to ask questions and share their own experiences on the topic. We also welcome other paediatric-related issues for discussion.
