ACIPC is excited to announce that we are holding a Lunch and Learn Webinar on Friday, 27 February 2026 at 12:00PM AEDT.
Topic: Applied Digital Technologies in IPC Education: Practical Training Solutions
Presenter: Dr Claudio Corvalan Diaz DVM, MSc, PhD candidate – Faculty of Medicine and Health Media Lab, The University of Sydney
Date and time: Friday 27 February 2026 at 12:00PM AEDT
Abstract:
This presentation explores how technologies such as virtual reality simulation and AI-driven conversational platforms can support education in infection prevention and control (IPC). It highlights practical examples developed by the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Media Lab, including VR hand hygiene training and AI-avatar scenarios. These tools allow learners to practise anytime, repeat scenarios, and experience more consistent training and assessment, complementing traditional IPC education.
About the presenter:
Dr Claudio Corvalán‑Díaz is the Senior Technical and Virtual Assets Officer, currently leading the Faculty of Medicine and Health’s Media Lab at The University of Sydney. He holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, a Master of Science in morpho‑anatomy, and is currently in the second year of his PhD.
Claudio joined the University of Sydney in 2013, initially working within the Anatomy Technical and Teaching Support Unit (ATTSU). During the COVID‑19 pandemic, adapting anatomy education to a world with limited face‑to‑face teaching, exploring emerging technologies to bridge gaps in student engagement, educational continuity, and workforce‑aligned skills became an urgent need that led the way to his current position.
At the FMH Media Lab, Claudio and of course his team, develops digital, immersive, and simulation-based learning technologies to support education across the Faculty of Medicine and Health and related health sciences disciplines.
They collaborate with educators and clinicians across the faculty to design cutting‑edge tools that enhance clinical training, communication, decision-making, and infection prevention and control education.
