Topic: The NSW Biocontainment Centre: Capabilities, Preparedness and Recent HCID Responses

Presenters: Dr Mary Wyer and Dr Patricia Ferguson

Join us for our August Lunch & Learn webinar as we learn about the NSW Biocontainment Centre (NBC) and the critical role it plays in supporting NSW’s preparedness for and response to high-consequence infectious diseases (HCIDs). In this Lunch and Learn session, Mary Wyer and Patricia Ferguson will provide an overview of the NBC, including its facilities, functions, and contributions to clinical care, research, training, and system preparedness. The presenters will also discuss recent responses to the Bundibugyo filovirus disease outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda and the Andes hantavirus cases, highlighting key lessons, challenges, and opportunities for strengthening biocontainment capability and healthcare system readiness.

About the presenters:

Dr Mary Wyer is a Registered Nurse and an Associate Professor of Practice (Biocontainment) at the Susan Wakil School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Sydney. Her clinical academic role is focused on developing and advancing biocontainment models through research and education. Dr Wyer’s research is based at the NSW Biocontainment Centre in Sydney, a purpose-built facility for the care of patients with high consequence infectious diseases, where she leads and supports research to strengthen infection prevention and person-centred care.

Dr Patricia Ferguson is an Infectious Diseases Physician and senior staff specialist at Westmead Hospital and the NSW Biocontainment Centre, where she is the Associate Director (Education & Training). She is passionate about preventing infection and improving safety for patients and staff.
