Description

Recognising survivor expertise could improve preparedness, response and recovery

The outcome of Ebola disease outbreaks has long depended on communities. It is time for response systems to recognise that survivors are not only beneficiaries of care or symbols of hope. They are knowledge holders, trust builders, and essential partners in preparedness, response, and recovery. Findings from interviews with Ebola disease survivors in Uganda and Liberia illustrate how Ebola disease survivors often become informal counsellors, advocates, and trusted community figures. By sharing their experiences, they help to reduce fear, stigma, and misconceptions about Ebola treatment units care, encouraging care-seeking. Survivors are “experiential experts” whose lived experiences can complement clinical and public health expertise, while ensuring participation remains voluntary, ethical, and supported.

Social Scientists, Katherina Thomas and Barthalomew Wilson (PREVAIL, Liberia) will lead a webinar presenting findings from interviews with Ebola disease survivors from Uganda and Liberia across past outbreaks, and welcoming discussions.
