National HAI Surveillance Research Project

On behalf of the Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control (ACIPC) and the Infection Prevention and Vascular Access research team at the University of Queensland, we invite you to participate in a research project.

The aim of the project is to achieve national consensus on criteria for selecting healthcare associated infections (HAIs) for surveillance in Australian acute care settings, a prioritised set of HAIs for national surveillance and a preferred set of definitions and measurement specifications for those HAIs.

A survey has been developed as part of this project to gain the opinions of participants in two separate rounds. The first survey focuses on the prioritisation of criteria for HAI surveillance. The second survey applies these criteria to candidate HAIs. The results of the two rounds will be presented at a roundtable discussion at the annual ACIPC scientific meeting in November 2026. The aim of the roundtable discussion is to gain final consensus and refinement on criteria and indicators for national HAI surveillance. Results will be published in a peer reviewed journal and disseminated to key government bodies across Australia.

Participation in the research project is entirely voluntary, and the survey responses are deidentified. We will not ask for any identifiable information however you may wish to nominate to participate in the roundtable discussion. To do so you will be required to provide an email address for future contact. This information will be stored separately to the survey responses. Completing the survey will take approximately 30 minutes. This study adheres to the principles of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research.
