Preparing for the Next Pandemic: Lessons Learned, Actions Needed
In a joint editorial, ACIPC President Stéphane Bouchoucha and President-Elect Sally Havers emphasise that the next pandemic is not a matter of if, but when. While the world continues to grapple with the impacts of COVID-19, they stress that now is the time to embed the lessons learned into daily practice and planning.
“We must acknowledge that another pandemic will come. We need to make planning—real planning—a routine activity, embedded into daily activities,” they write.
The editorial calls for a renewed focus on infection prevention and control, ensuring that behaviours such as hand hygiene, safe indoor environments, and adherence to the hierarchy of controls become part of everyday practice across health and community settings.
“It may look like an uphill battle, but we already have many of the tools we need to prepare.”
They also highlight the importance of combating misinformation and vaccine hesitancy, and of advocating for those most vulnerable to infectious diseases.
The message is clear: preparation is possible, and action today will mean stronger resilience tomorrow.
