The Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing has announced that from 1 August, training and reporting requirements will change for Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Leads.
Changes include:
- Infection Prevention and Control Leads will no longer need to complete COVID-19 training modules as part of their specialist training. Instead, they will need to complete interim training on the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission’s online learning platform.
- Providers will no longer need to report Infection Prevention and Control Lead details. This is to help reduce administrative burden. Providers will still need to keep records as required under the Records Principles 2014.
There is no change to the IPC Lead training requirements that stipulate the IPC Lead must complete specialist training that is:
- specified at the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level 8
- delivered by a recognised education or training provider
- requires students to pass assessments to complete the course
- focused on IPC.
Aged care providers are obligated by the Aged Care Quality Standards to minimise infection-related risks, including:
- having an effective IPC program in place
- appointing an IPC Lead onsite
- providing IPC training and education to all workers
