WHO Director-General’s Update on the Ebola Outbreak — DRC & Uganda
Speaking at a briefing on 25 May 2026, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus provided a sobering update on the rapidly evolving Ebola outbreak in the DRC and Uganda.
To date, over 900 suspected cases and 220 suspected deaths have been recorded in the DRC, with 101 confirmed cases and 10 confirmed deaths. Uganda has reported five confirmed cases and one death.
Dr Tedros acknowledged the response faces significant challenges — including delayed detection, active conflict and mass displacement in affected provinces, deep community distrust of authorities, and no approved vaccines or therapeutics for the Bundibugyo strain.
WHO has released US$3.9 million in emergency funding and is working closely with Africa CDC and national governments on all fronts, from contact tracing to community engagement.
