World Hand Hygiene Day 2026: Action Saves Lives
World Hand Hygiene Day is observed annually on 5 May, coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO). This year’s theme — “Action Saves Lives” — underscores the vital role clean hands play in preventing infections and safeguarding patients, healthcare workers, and communities alike.
ACIPC is proud to support this global campaign with a rich suite of resources designed to make participation easy for organisations of all sizes. From printable A3/A4 posters and email signature banners to interactive activities like Hand Hygiene Bingo, a daily Wordle puzzle, and a Global Commitment Wall where staff pledge their dedication to clean hands, there is something for every workplace.
This year, ACIPC is again hosting a Photo Competition — inviting teams to share how they are celebrating the day. Winning entries will receive a custom-engraved trophy and feature in IPC News. To enter, simply tag us in #ACIPC on social media or email photos to office@acipc.org.au.
The campaign runs as a themed awareness week from 5–9 May, with each day shining a spotlight on a different pillar of hand hygiene practice — from correct technique and the WHO 5 Moments, through to governance, policy, and ensuring adequate access to hand hygiene supplies.
